Blackjack definition and meaning

Blackjack is one of the most popular table games both in online and brick-and-mortar casinos. It is a variant of a banking game known as Twenty-One and a distant relative of Vingt-et-Un and Pontoon.

Even blackjack itself has numerous popular variances, such as European Blackjack, American Blackjack, Blackjack Switch, and Spanish 21.

Blackjack is played with 2-8 standard 52-card decks. To win in blackjack, a player must beat the dealer by getting a card sum value of 21 or by being closer to 21 than the dealer, without exceeding the number. Cards 2 through 10 are worth their pip value and face cards such as jack, queen, and king are all worth ten, while aces can be worth either 1 or 11.

The gameplay is relatively simple since there are only several actions players can take, such as hit, stand, double down, split, or surrender. However, the exact rules vary from one variant to another, so make sure to get familiar with the rules before you start playing.
